Will the USA abandon NATO if Russia attacks Poland?

Almost certainly.

Its fair to say the rest of Europe currently doesn’t regard the US as a very reliable ally (although rumour has it that Russia is quite chuffed with its new partner in crime) hence the policy direction being discussed at European summits this week around building a European Military Alliance.

The Irony that is not lost on most NATO members (although I suspect very much lost on the US, a country not known for their grasp or Irony – just see Trumps comments about cleaning up non elected government officials earlier this week) being that the only country to ever trigger article 5 was the US and the whole of NATO rallied behind them at huge monetary and military lives cost without so much as a second thought – because that’s what allies do!

Casimir Pulaski-Photo courtesy of the internet.

The above photo is of Polish soldier and war hero Casimir Pulaski. He volunteered to fight for the American cause in 1777, serving with bravery and distinction. At the Battle of Brandywine, Pulaski’s cavalry saved the life of George Washington by serving as his bodyguard and fighting a delaying action when Washington’s position was nearly overrun. He was promoted to Brigadier General for his heroism.

Pulaski would spend the next two years with the army, including the disastrous 1778 winter at Valley Forge, when 20% of the men died from disease and exposure, and thousands more became ill. He was tasked with transforming the American cavalry into an effective fighting force. With his own funds he recruited several hundred skilled horsemen and personally trained them, creating a highly skilled company of soldiers.

At the 1779 Siege of Savannah, Pulaski and his company were placed under command of the French. Several French led attacks were badly routed, and heavy casualties were reported. Pulaski personally led his legion in an attempt to rally the men. He fell, mortally wounded.

Today there are hundreds of roads, parks, and statues named after Pulaski, and yearly parades are still held in his honor.

If Poland were attacked, the United States would fight, to the death.
