This is the the retired US Aircraft Carrier USS America CV-66, as she slips beneath the waves to her final resting place. She was decommissioned in August of 1996. In April of 2005 she was towed out to sea to be used as a target to test multiple weapons systems. For 4 weeks, she was hit with missiles, bombs and torpedoes. At the end of the 4 week, she was still afloat. The US Navy sent demolition teams aboard to finish sinking her.
Let me repeat, for 4 weeks, she was pummeled with just about everything the US had to throw at her, yet she remained afloat. With no crew on board to do damage control or fight the incoming ordinance.
This ship was commissioned in 1965, she was 40 years old when she met her fate. She sat in the Philadelphia shipyard with no upkeep for 9 years before she made her final voyage.
If this ship can stay afloat after a 4 week beating with nobody on board doing damage control or taking on incoming threats, what makes ANYONE think they can sink a more modern carrier with a full complement of crew and air wing.
