What unusual phenomena led to the extinction of a particular animal?

I really have a very unusual story to answer this question.

Its about lots of sex and beer and even more insects.

It was 1983, when two biologists were on a field trip through Western Australia, they noticed something really odd by the roadside.

There was a stack of empty beer bottles dumped away by the deserted field. The reason it caught their attention was because there was this swarm of male giant jewel beetles clinging to these bottles.

What was so unusual about it🤔

Well, how do I put this elegantly….they were fucking the bottles.

The biologists investigated it further and quickly found the reason behind this weird behaviour.

This is how the female giant jewel beetle looks,

Glossy and brown with small dotted pits on their back

The beer bottles too were glossy with a very similar shade of brown and most importantly it had the dotted pits. Dotted for his pleasure I guess😅

It is believed that the male beetles lost all interest in the actual real female beetles because the beer bottles were bigger and curvier and were available in abundance.

This problem reached at a level where their population almost went extinct. The Australian government had to interfere and ban those bottle designs to save the beetles.

It is true indeed, alcohol does ruin relationships.
