Isn’t it funny and pathetic that Canadians boycott American products?

You know who isn’t finding it funny or pathetic? American manufacturers.

Jack Daniels’ Distillery said that the boycott is “worse than tariffs”.

Florida’s tourism industry is about to completely die. Without Canadian snowbirds, all they’ve got is lots of gators.

Tesla is finding it difficult to give away their cars here in Canada.

And Lockheed Martin is about to find out that our PM wants in on those boycotts. There goes several billion dollars.

So keep laughing. All the way to the poor house.

Can Canada ultimately win a one-on-one trade war with America? No, sadly they can’t. America is bigger and richer. But there are other things to consider.

Firstly, Canada is not alone. Trump’s trade war was unfocused. It was a shotgun approach that hit enemies and allies alike. Many of those (former) allies are now working together to develop separate understandings and agreements that lessen their dependency on America. It will take time. But ultimately these new groupings will weaken America’s economic dominance.

Secondly, what would you have Canada do? Just roll over and submit? It would be criminal – yes, criminal – for any Canadian government to have reacted to Trump’s unwarranted tariff attack by giving in. Imagine saying to Canadian companies, “look, just shave your profits so your neighboring companies can make more.”

Or to Canadian taxpayers, “sorry but we need you to pay more so we can subsidize exports to America, so American companies can make more money.” Or, to Canadian workers, “sorry mates, we want you to give up your jobs with a smile, so we can give them to American workers.”

A wolverine does not back down to a cougar because the cougar is larger. Should Canada just give in to whatever bully tactics Trump decides? Should Ukraine just give in to whatever Putin decides? Should Taiwan just give in to what China wants? Should Britain have just given in to what Germany, Italy and Japan wanted?
